30 Years Ago: The Furiani Stadium Disaster

On May 5th, 1992, the Stade Armand-Cesari in Furiani, France witnessed an unspeakable tragedy. Thirty years ago, a stand collapsed during a football match between SC Bastia and Marseille Olympique, killing 19 people and injuring 2,357.

The Worst Tragedy in French Sport

The Furiani stadium disaster remains the darkest day in French sports history. The victims, ranging from children to adults, were innocent spectators who had come to enjoy a football match. The collapse of the stand, which was later attributed to structural defects, sent shockwaves throughout the country and beyond.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Stade Armand-Cesari underwent extensive renovations to ensure the safety of future spectators. However, the memory of that fateful day continues to serve as a somber reminder of the importance of safety in sports venues.
